Semicon Associates manufactures:
Ceradyne and Semicon Associates supply many of the
“active” components used in the high power microwave tube industry:
-
Semicon Associates cathodes provide the electrons used to generate the
microwaves.
-
Semicon Associates magnets are used to focus the electron beam as it moves
through the tube.
-
Ceradyne “lossy” ceramics are used to selectively absorb microwave energy of
unwanted frequencies enabling the tube to efficiently amplify the microwave
signal in the desired band.
-
Ceradyne aluminum nitride is used to collect “spent” electrons at the end of
the tube and dissipate generated heat.
Aluminum Nitride is used to replace beryllium oxide components in microwave
tubes in areas where thermal management is of concern, such as in collectors.
Aluminum nitride is selected because it is an electrical insulator having a
thermal conductivity equal to beryllium at an operating temperature of 100 to
200C.
Lossy Ceramics are used as microwave absorbers and are designed to have
specific dielectric and dielectric loss properties. The family of MgO-SiC
materials is designed to absorb microwave energy in a very specific frequency
range. Al2O3 composites and AlN based composites are broadband absorbers and
are specifically designed to match the characteristics of the tube.
